Ceremonial Cacao - Guide and Recipe

A cacao ceremony is an ancient Mesoamerican tradition, originating with the Maya and Aztecs. Once cherished for its spiritual, medicinal, and heart-opening abilities.

Today we often celebrate cacao in smaller, often solo rituals. Serving the same purpose as before cacao teaches us how to reconnect with our own hearts, tend to our relationships, and walk through life purposefully, guided by clear vision.

- Where Do I Start? -

We start with intention of openness, calming our mind and clearing our space.

Whether your ritual start with finding your favourite mug or lighting a candle. It is all a part of setting the mood to suit you.

- How much? -

With cacao the amount used very much depends on the purpose of this ritual. Due to the natural stimulant it is only recommended to have 5-10g in a bedtime dose.

A common daily dose would be 10-15g, whereas a meditation dose can go up to 25g.

Most importantly a ceremonial dose, this is typically around 42g. Truly opening up your heart to the mother cacao.

- Preparing Cacao -

-   Finely chop or grate cacao and put to the side.

-   Heat 50ml of water or plant-based milk until hot, but not boiling.

-   Add cacao and stir gently until fully melted.

-   Mix in remaining liquids.

-   Add a sprinkle of salt will help with the bitterness.

Adjust to personal preference - I enjoy 50/50 water and coconut milk. Mixed with salt and honey!

- Giving Thanks -

Packed with hundreds of nutritious compounds, grown in a beautiful warm Peruvian rainforest and celebrated by tribes for centuries, cacao deserves our gratitude for making it all the way to your favourite mug.

Full of iron, magnesium, potassium and anti-oxidants, cacao gets its name the "heart-opener" from its abilities to decrease the risk of heart attacks by opening up the vessels that allow blood to flow through your heart. Filling you with that warm energy as it breaks through the layers of stress.
